The color of the year has been announced by Pantone. The selection for 2026 is an off-white or light gray shade called Cloud Dancer.

Pantone's process of selecting The Color of the Year actually takes an entire year. Led by a team of color experts, the Pantone Color Institute, it travels the world observing influences across fashion, art, design, technology, and socioeconomic conditions.

The team analyzes emerging trends in entertainment, travel, lifestyle, and even sporting events to identify colors gaining cultural momentum. The selection reflects the global mood, what people in various countries are experiencing emotionally and psychologically. For example, during uncertain times, Pantone might choose calming hues, while periods of optimism inspire vibrant choices.
The team considers how color influences mood, consumer behavior, and creative expression. Industry leaders, designers, and brand representatives also provide input.
The Pantone Institute also examines color usage in upcoming collections, films, and social movements. The chosen color must feel relevant across multiple industries and resonate internationally.
This year's pick is not without controversy. Off white almost doesn't seem like a color at all. But it makes sense, sociologically and historically. In 2020, when we were in the midst of a pandemic, their choice was dark gray. This is what Laurie Pressman, vice president of Pantone Color Institute had to say about this year's choice to Good Housekeeping:
"We are living in a transitional time where people are seeking truth, possibility and a new way of living. Pantone 11-4201 Cloud Dancer is an airy white hue that exemplifies our search for balance between our digital future and our primal need for human connection."
